Ormond Beach Florida

The beautiful City of Ormond Beach, Florida is located in Volusia County just north of Daytona Beach. Ormand Beach is also the great backdrop for the beautiful 1800 acre Tomoka State Park, a bird watchers paradise. You may even catch a glimpse of other wildlife such as Manatees, Alligators, Egrets and the Bald Eagle at certain times of the year. Many activities available throughout are hiking, camping, canoeing, and boating followed by a visit to the parks Museum to view the local artist’s works of art.

Located just off of the Halifax River and Atlantic Ocean, The City of Ormand Beach was acquired from Spain in 1821. Later named after an Anglo-Irish and Scotch sea captain by the name of James Ormond I, and in 1949 changed the name to read Ormond Beach. On January 1, 1888 a small hotel was opened in Ormond Beach by two men John Anderson and James Downing Price, and two years later was purchased by Henry Flagler and expanded to accommodate up to 600 guests to meet the supply and demand of the passengers to the nearby railroad known as the Florida East Coast Railway.

One of the frequent guests at the Ormond Beach Hotel was a man by the name of John D. Rockefeller of Standard Oil Company and a former business partner of Flagler’s, and after a few seasons to the Ormond Beach area he purchased an estate known as the Casements. This would later be his winter home during the last part of his life. In 1939 the Casements were sold and eventually purchased by the City of Ormond Beach which is now known as the cultural center as it is today.
